Delete your account
Account deletion is permanent. It is different from signing out, locking the app, or removing messages from one device.
Delete from the iOS app
- Open Settings.
- Under Danger zone, choose Permanently delete account.
- Read the deletion summary, type your exact username, confirm the acknowledgement, and enter the account password.
- Choose Delete account permanently. Do not close the app until the service confirms deletion and the app finishes its local cleanup.
If the server cannot be reached, the app shows that deletion failed and keeps the account. A local-only wipe is never presented as successful account deletion.
What successful deletion removes
The active service record is removed immediately after successful authentication. Current server deletion removes:
- the account profile, password verifier, public key, encrypted identity-recovery material and avatar;
- authenticated sessions, Web Push subscriptions and APNs device registrations;
- standard and guest invites created by or attached to the account, including guests created by its temporary links;
- the account’s offline queue and queued envelopes to or from the deleted account;
- block-list references and active safety reports involving the deleted account;
- group membership, role and ban records. An empty group is deleted; otherwise ownership is transferred deterministically to a remaining administrator or member.
After server confirmation, a release-ready client must remove the selected account’s encrypted local database, identity material and tokens from that device without deleting another local account.
What may remain
- Rotating backups: operational backup files are removed by age and may contain the prior state for up to 7 days.
- Recipient copies: messages, files, screenshots or exports already held by another participant are outside your account record and cannot be erased by deleting your account.
- Required records: another party may retain information it is legally required to keep.
Before deleting
- Deletion cannot be undone through the product, and you should not rely on an operational backup to restore an account.
- Do not assume that creating the same username later restores the old identity, contacts or messages.
- Export only information you are entitled to keep, and store it securely.
- If you only want to remove one device, use the separate sign-out/local-data option instead.
